About Deshantor
Deshantor is a grassroots community-based group striving to honour Bangla culture through the power and beauty of interpretive and traditional dance forms of the region. The deep love and veneration for Bangla heritage that has been shaped by centuries of literature, music, poetry, art, and dance is at the heart of this collaborative space where Bangali women living in Hamilton, Ontario find solace in the roots at the core of their individual and collective identities.
Deshantor is more than a dance group; it is a small community united in the love of dance, reverence for Bangla heritage and culture, and the shared purpose of remaining connected to our roots. The members of the group believe that preserving cultural heritage is both a privilege and a responsibility. By sharing the beauty of Bangla traditions with future generations, they ensure that the stories, music, literature, and values that have defined their unique and rich Bangali identity, continue to etch a path into the future.

চিত্রাঙ্গদা | Chitrangada
Chitrangada is one of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Thakur’s most iconic dance dramas that celebrates the strength and courage of the divine feminine. Inspired by a tale from the Mahabharata, it is a timeless story of identity, courage, self-discovery, and the strength that comes from embracing one's true self beyond the gender binary.
The production follows the journey of warrior Princess Chitrangada of Manipur as she navigates love and duty while struggling to fit in within the patriarchal binaries of what it means to be a woman. By merging Thakur’s evocative poetry and unforgettable music with expressive choreography, Chitrangada continues to resonate with audiences across generations, celebrating the dignity, resilience, and inner power of women.
Deshantor is preparing to present an original interpretation of Chitrangada in July 2027 in Canada. Bringing Chitrangada to the stage is both an artistic endeavor and a cultural tribute; it honours the literary genius of Thakur while sharing the sophistication, depth, and beauty of Bangali dance and storytelling.
